creeping up into spots that you can't get to. They basically joined the 2 pieces of sheet metal using some weird foamy glue that is porous. Moisture gets trapped and voila. Definitely starts from the inside out. By the time you see it, it's too late. Mazda has recognized this as a problem. I believe for 2013+ models, they increased their rust perforation warranty to 8 years from 5 years as they were getting known for rust issues on Proteges, 3s, MPVs and 5s. Keep your eyes open for 3rd gen Protege/Protege5s on the road. Hard to find one that isn't rusting in the same spots as mine. The tailgate on the Protege 5s is pretty common to rust. I've seen many early model year 3s rusting in the same spot. Meanwhile you can look at 2002 Civics, Corollas, Sentras, Cavaliers/Cobalts, Focuses (or is it Focii?), with similar mileage to mine and it's harder to find one that is rusting. It's gotten so bad that it's rusting in the following spots now: 1. Front fenders by the mud flaps. 2. Around the windshield. 3. Bottoms of the doors. 4. Rocker panels. 5. Hood (from the inside out, under the 3m). Definitely not because of a rock chip. But I'll still drive it while it's together. Honestly, you wouldn't know the body is rusting so badly when you are driving it. Don't think that this car will last beyond this winter though.
